Kolejne krótkie opowiadanie (ok. 10800 słów). Trochę mroczna (w klimatach halloweenowych) opowieść o parze złodziei, którzy jednak mają swoje zasady (może nawet honor? ;)). Pełna cynicznego humoru  (czyli takiego, jak lubię najbardziej) historia, która od początku widać, że nie jest w pełni oczywista, dlatego słuchacz czeka na “drugą odsłonę”. Nie ma nudy.

Included here is a selection of recordings of Federal Aviation Administration, Defense Department, and American Airlines communications from September 11, 2001. You will hear air traffic controllers, military aviation officers, airline and fighter jet pilots, as well as two of the hijackers, during two hours of that historic morning.
Transcripts and some of the recordings have been released previously, but not the complete “audio monograph”, as it was described by the September 11 Commission. The recordings were originally intended to be part of the Commissions’ 2004 report on the terrorist attacks, but were not ready in time for a legal review before the Commission finished its work. They have now been released in their entirety.

Jeden z bardziej poruszających audiobooków, które do tej pory miałem okazję słuchać. Autentyczne zapisy komunikacji między kontrolerami lotów, pilotami samolotów i innymi osobami zaangażowanymi podczas pamiętnego 11 września 2001 r. Fenomenalnie pokazany brak jasności sytuacji, próby odnalezienia zagubionych samolotów oraz zaangażowanie wszystkich osób. Do tej pory nie miałem świadomości, że zgubienie samolotu w tak “cywilizowanej” przestrzeni powietrznej (nie na jakimś odludziu bez pokrycia sygnałami radarów), w dobie współczesnych możliwości technicznych, jest w ogóle możliwe. Mogłoby się wydawać, że 2 godziny nagrań takich rozmów będzie nudne, monotonne i ciężkie do odsłuchania. Zdecydowanie tak nie jest. Polecam.

Króciutkie opowiadanie, którego wysłuchanie zajmuje pół godziny. Czysta rozrywka, audiobook, którego słucha się z przyjemnością. Idealny na krótkie wybieganie (taak, ciągle audiobooki łączę z treningami biegowymi).  Narrator w audiobookach to jeden z ważniejszych elementów – tutaj spisuje się na medal. Klimat opowiadania tworzą wnętrza piwnic brytyjskiej biblioteki, w których coś się czai. Czy to poltergeist czy też coś innego? Polowanie czas zacząć ;)

D. J. Molles – Rocky River Bridge

To króciutkie opowiadanie to prequel do cyklu  A Grower’s war. Przesłuchałem tego audiobooka ponieważ, krótko mówiąc, był za darmo. Ale muszę przyznać, że tworzenie takich prequeli do większych pozycji to doskonały pomysł na promocję. Bardzo udane wprowadzenie w wojenny świat. Zachowania młodych chłopców w zderzeniu się z twardymi żołnierzami bez skrupułów. Myślę, że akurat wsłuchanie się w taki amerykański, żołnierski język dodaje bardzo dużo klimatu. Warto.

Doskonały pomysł. Wykonanie również bardzo dobre. Niczego więcej naprawdę nie potrzeba, aby poczuć magię Świąt Bożego Narodzenia. Czy to nie genialne podejście? Wziąć swoich lektorów, nie po to żeby przeczytali kolejną pozycję,  ale żeby mogli oddać kawałek siebie. Swoje wspomnienia związane ze Świętami, swoje rodzinne opowieści, historie z dzieciństwa. W tym roku w czasie Świąt miałem ciche marzenie, żeby namówić swoich rodziców na wspomnienia z ich dzieciństwa. Nie udało mi się, ale mam nadzieję, że w przyszłym roku dopnę swego. Ja przesłuchałem tego audiobooka chyba w sierpniu, ale polecam wszystkim bardziej zimowy czas – w sam raz żeby poczuć magię Świąt ;).

Ray Bradbury – The Playground

The Playground was part of the first hardcover edition of Ray Bradbury’s legendary work Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953. In the story, Charles Underhill is a widower who will do anything to protect his young son Jim from the horrors of the playground – a playground which he and the boy pass by daily and the tumult of which, the activity, brings back to Charles the anguish of his own childhood. The playground, like childhood itself, is a nightmare of torment and vulnerability; Charles fears his sensitive son will be destroyed there just as he almost was so many years ago.

Underhill’s sister Carol, who has moved in to help raise the young boy after his mother passed away, feels differently. The playground, she believes, is preparation for life, Jim will survive the experience she feels, and he will be the better for it and more equipped to deal with the rigor and obligation of adult existence.Underhill is caught between his own fear and his sister’s invocation of reason and feels paralyzed. A mysterious boy calls out to him from the playground, and seems to know all too well why Underhill is there and what the source of his agony really is. A mysterious Manager also lurks to whom the strange boy directs Underhill. An agreement can be made perhaps – this is what the boy tells Underhill. Perhaps Jim can be spared the playground, but of course, a substitute must be found.

Zaletą audiobooków jest fakt, że wpadają mi w ręce krótkie opowieści, których w formie papierowej nigdy bym nie przeczytał. “The Playground” to taka trochę przypowieść, którą można by usłyszeć przy ognisku. Trochę straszna, trochę śmieszna, a trochę dająca do myślenia. W największym skrócie to “punkt widzenia zależy od punktu siedzenia”. Plus trochę demonów z przeszłości ;). To, jak możemy postrzegać plac zabaw z biegającą gromadą dzieciaków faktycznie może zależeć od tego czy sami jesteśmy dziećmi, czy mamy dzieci, czy kiedyś byliśmy tymi, którzy gonią inne dzieciaki czy też tymi ściganymi… Może należałoby spróbować zrozumieć każdą stronę. A co, jeśli ktoś tkwi na placu zabaw, uwięziony tam od wielu, wielu lat?

Brandon Sanderson – Mitosis: A Reckoners Story

Jeśli chodzi o audiobooki do biegania, to mój wybór opiera się często na długości dystansu, który mam do pokonania. Nie mam oporów przed żadną tematyką – przynajmniej przy pierwszym spotkaniu z każdym autorem. Nawet jeśli chodzi o postaci ze zdolnością do klonowania samych siebie, których jedyną słabością jest… pewna muzyka. ;). Mitosis to krótka opowieść wpleciona pomiędzy dwa tomy postapokaliptycznej trylogii fantasy “The Reckoners”. Jeśli ktoś lubi takie klimaty to pewnie będzie zadowolony.

Śmieszny, krótki audiobook przesłuchany przy bieganiu. Nie trzeba się mocno skupiać na treści – nawet zgubione kilka zdań, których nie udało się usłyszeć przez przejeżdżający samochód nie powodują utraty wątku. Wartość tej opowieści nie leży w historii jako całości tylko w smaczkach związanych z humorystycznym językiem i nawiązywaniem do ikon kultury masowej, jak np. pojawienie się postaci Chucka Norrisa.

Neil Gaiman – Click-Clack the Rattlebag

A few years ago, I blogged about an idea I had for a new Halloween tradition…. I proposed that, on Hallowe’en or during the week of Hallowe’en, we give each other scary books. And so All Hallows’ Read was born. This year, I decided to make the tradition Audible. Literally. Króciutka historia, której słucha się z przyjemnością. To typ opowieści, którą opowiada się wieczorem przy ognisku, żeby trochę postraszyć zebranych wokół. Opowiadane niby dla żartów, zasiewają ziarno niepewności i powodują, że człowiek mimo woli ogląda się za siebie… I z lekko przyspieszonym biciem serca wkłada rękę do ciemnego pokoju, żeby zapalić światło… ;)

Bram Stoker – Lair of the White Worm

The Lair of the White Worm (also known as The Garden of Evil) is a horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. It is partly based on the legend of the Lambton Worm. The book was published in 1911 by Rider and Son in the UK, the year before Stoker’s death, with color illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith. In 1925, it was republished in a highly abridged and rewritten form. Over a hundred pages were removed, the rewritten book having only twenty-eight chapters instead of the original forty. The final eleven chapters were cut down to only five, leading some critics to complain that the ending was abrupt and inconsistent.

To chyba jedna z niższych ocen, które dałem książce w tym spisie, a najniższa jaką oceniłem audiobook. Książka napisana jest językiem angielskim z początku XX w. Czy to możliwe, że zbyt mało zrozumiałem? Na początku faktycznie miałem kłopot z dziwnym słownictwem, ale zawsze mogłem przerwać słuchanie i sprawdzić znaczenie, gdy uciekał mi kontekst.

Na początku powinienem jeszcze napisać, że pierwszy raz postanowiłem słuchać audiobooka po angielsku, jednocześnie śledząc tekst na Kindle’u. Niestety nie polecam takiego rozwiązania. Wymagało to ode mnie 4 równoczesnych czynności –  1) słuchania po angielsku, 2) tłumaczenia sobie w głowie słów, które słyszę, 3) śledzenia tekstu, który dopasowywałem do tego, co słyszę, 4) chyba najważniejsze – poznawania historii, którą autor opisał. Najgorzej niestety szło z tym ostatnim – momentami rozumiałem słowa, ale nie wiedziałem o czym jest książka. Kolega namawia mnie do spróbowania słuchania audiobooka sprzężonego z aplikacją, która podświetla słuchany tekst (na zasadzie karaoke). Niestety wymagałoby to czytania na telefonie, ewentualnie na tablecie, na co nie mam najmniejszej ochoty. W przyszłości będę więc albo czytał, albo słuchał.

Historia sama w sobie też nie porywa. Wydaje mi się, że autor trochę zmarnował potencjał legendy, co jeszcze zostało spotęgowane tym, że książka została w kolejnym wydaniu tak bardzo okrojona. W praktyce czuć jak niektóre wątki urywają się, a opisy scen są strasznie biedne i poszarpane. Część wydarzeń pozostaje więc niewyjaśniona, a główny bieg wydarzeń wydaje się spłycony do minimum. Bram Stoker to autor “Drakuli”, co zapewne zachęca (w moim przypadku tak było) do sięgania po jego inne dzieła. Ale tej książki nie polecam.
